About

In 1985, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) was established as a bank holding company by the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce and Industry, with the support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The founders of ETI had the goal of filling the gap in the banking sector of West Africa, which was mainly populated by foreign and state-owned banks. Ecopromotions S.A. was incorporated to raise the seed capital for the necessary feasibility studies and promotional activities. ETI was given an authorised capital of US$100 million, of which US$32 million was raised from over 1,500 individuals and institutions from West African countries, with ECOWAS Fund being the largest shareholder. A Headquarters' Agreement was signed with the Government of Togo in 1985, granting ETI the status of an international organisation. Operations began in Togo in March 1988.

Togo: Africa’s Strategic Gateway of Trade, Culture, and Coastal Commerce: Togo is a small but strategically important West African nation known for its strong trading culture, coastal access, agricultural production, and role as a regional logistics hub. Despite its size, Togo plays a significant role in connecting markets across West Africa. One of Togo’s most unique strengths is its position as a trade and transport gateway. The Port of Lomé is one of the deepest and busiest seaports in West Africa, serving as a key entry point for goods moving into landlocked countries like Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali. This makes Togo an important logistics and re-export hub in the region. Togo is also strongly agricultural, with cocoa, coffee, cotton, cassava, maize, and palm oil among its key products. Agriculture supports a large portion of the population and contributes significantly to exports and rural livelihoods. The country also has phosphate reserves, which are an important part of its mining sector. What makes Togo especially unique is its rich cultural diversity and traditional heritage. The country is home to many ethnic groups, each contributing to music, dance, festivals, and craftsmanship. Voodoo traditions are also an important part of cultural identity and are recognized in national festivals and heritage celebrations. For Africans engaging with Togo, the country offers opportunities in logistics, agriculture, trade, port services, manufacturing, and regional commerce. Visitors can expect warm coastal cities, active markets, cultural festivals, and a growing economy built around connectivity and trade.
