About

A story that has lasted for more than 50 years between Point Mulhouse and Point-Afrique

1964 The Point Mulhouse association was founded by a group of friends who began organizing flights to Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

1978 The first aircraft, a Pan Am 707, was purchased. This marked the beginning of the first long-haul charter flights with the creation of the Point Air company.

1988 Following a flight ban, Point Air went bankrupt, dragging Point Mulhouse down with it.

1990 Maurice Freund became the CEO of Malitas (a Malian airline) in the 1990s.

1995 Point-Afrique was created as a travel cooperative. Most of the members were former Point Mulhouse members (the renowned geologist Théodore Monod was one of the Point members).

1996 to 2008: Charter flights were launched to Agadez & Niamey (Niger), Mopti & Bamako (Mali), Atar (Mauritania), Sebha & Benghazi (Libya), El Rachidia (Morocco), Tamanrasset, Djanet, Timimoun & Ghardaïa (Algeria), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Cotonou (Benin), Dakar, Ziguinchor & Saint-Louis (Senegal).

2007: The deaths of four French tourists in Aleg, Mauritania, marked the beginning of the gradual end of Point-Afrique's operations in West Africa and its flights to the Sahara and Sahel.

2012: Flights and tours resumed with the launch of Faya Largeau in Chad for three seasons. Due to a lack of activity, Point-Afrique went into a deep dormancy until 2017.

2017/18: Tourism in Mauritania was revived with the chartering of 14 weekly flights to Atar.

2018/19: Tours resumed and the desert train service in Mauritania was relaunched

Niger: Africa’s Sahel Heart of Minerals, Culture, and Desert Trade: Niger is a vast Sahelian nation known for its rich cultural traditions, strategic location in West Africa, and significant natural resource potential. Despite being largely desert, Niger plays an important role in regional trade, security, and trans-Saharan cultural exchange. One of Niger’s most unique strengths is its abundance of natural resources. The country is a major producer of uranium, which is a key global energy resource. It also has deposits of gold, coal, oil, and other minerals that support long-term economic development opportunities. Niger is also strongly rooted in agriculture and livestock farming. Many communities depend on millet, sorghum, cowpeas, onions, and cattle for livelihood and trade. The Niger River valley and seasonal farming areas provide essential support for food production in the region. What makes Niger especially unique is its deep cultural heritage and nomadic traditions. The country is home to diverse ethnic groups such as the Hausa, Tuareg, Fulani, and Zarma, each contributing to music, storytelling, craftsmanship, and desert trade traditions that have existed for centuries. For Africans engaging with Niger, the country offers opportunities in mining, agriculture, livestock trade, solar energy, and regional commerce across the Sahel. Visitors can expect rich desert culture, traditional markets, warm hospitality, and a strong sense of community resilience shaped by life in the Sahara and Sahel regions.
